How to check Blood Pressure manually
Things you will need:
- A stethoscope
- Blood pressure cuff (one that is an accurate size for your arm)
- A blood pressure measurement tool
Get yourself prepared by relaxing for up to five minutes before beginning. Sit upright with the upper arm being positioned correctly so that it is level with the heart and make sure the feet are flat on the floor. Remove any extra clothing that might interfere with the blood pressure cuff. Make sure there will be no talking from yourself and others at the time of testing.
Wrap the cuff around the arm, snugly, covering the brachial artery in the upper arm.
Place the stethoscope to the crease of the same arm that the cuff is located.
Begin pumping the cuff bulb until you hear no pulse beat coming from the ears of the stethoscope.
Slowly release the pressure in the cuff.
Listen for the systolic reading, this will be the first rhythm of sound heard as the blood begins to flow in the arm again. It may sound like a tapping noise at first.
Listen for the diastolic reading. To do this, continue listening as the cuff pressure lowers and the sounds begin to fade away. Remember the number on the gauge when the sounds stop completely, this will be the diastolic reading.
If you feel more comfortable, you can double check the readings using the other arm. Make sure to wait about five minutes between the readings then follow steps 1 through 7 again on the opposite arm.
